What is Art Therapy?

posted by Marie in Art Therapy

Art Therapy involves the use of art materials for the making of images, drawings or claywork for self-expression, reflection and exploration in the presence of a trained Art Therapist.

Do I need to be good at Art?

No previous experience or skill in art-making is required. The value of the drawing or painting lies in its contribution to the therapy rather than whether it is ‘good art’. The process of creating the work is more important than the final product.

The Practice

Art Therapy sessions take place in my studio which is an old chapel located in a 600-year-old village. The sessions begin with an interview, followed by an introduction to the art therapy space. In every session there is time for activity and discussion.

Uses of Art Therapy

Many difficult and poorly understood feelings can find release through image-making. The image is the focus of all communication between creator and therapist. The Art Therapist does not interpret the images.

Art in Therapy

The art activity is not the sole therapeutic agent. The role of the therapist is to work with the creator to connect the meaning of an image to an event in his/her life and to aid the development of resources within the exploration. In this context the art works as a bridge between the creator and the therapist in promoting communication. As a result, very often poorly understood feelings begin to find a clearer definition.

Creativity

Art Therapy touches all aspects of a person. The overall objective of Art Therapy is to enable the person to change and grow on a personal level.

I am particularly interested in the development of the creative process

I am an artist, born in Canada and presently living and painting in the U.K. In my painting I work with what I call the ‘interior landscape’; I use images and ideas from my dreams to help me represent visually the mountain ranges and coastal plains inside a person. My studio is an old chapel situated in Abbotsbury, a 600-year-old village in South West Dorset. This is where I work and exhibit my paintings... It is also the place where I hold my Art Therapy workshops. The studio is open to the public all year round.
